We welcome 2012 and know that good things are in store for the rescue.
There is much work being done to secure a new home for the rescue.... hence not much in the way of updates.
The ranch remains under Quarantine as there are still a few stragglers sick with runny noses. It amazes me that the herd all but a couple managed to come down with strangles, mild cases due to the fact that all had been vaccinated. Still we are taking our time to issue an all clear.
We will be holding an open adoption weekend the first weekend of Febuary, all 3 days.
If you are interested in adopting now is the time. Our fees are reduced in light of the cost of hay. We encourage you to put in an application ahead of time and get your approval before the date. We also recommend a quarantine unless your home does not already have horses.

Please bear with slow answers to emails as at this time there is only Belinda responding to all inquiries along with all of the behind the scenes work. As you all know the rescue is a non-profit and there is still jobs to go to to ensure the rescue has funds coming in.

A special thank you to those of you helping physically and financially with our efforts, they all add up and I am so thankful for your support. If you are able we do appreciate donations towards our hay bill, now running at $15/bale. We are currently are supplementing all of the horses at Lone Oak.

As the year draws to a close I look back and see what we have been able to accomplish.
For those of you new to Lone Oak Rescue, we are a small rescue, we have only a handful of us who volunteer our time to care for these horses. Through the course of this year ....

We cared for a total of 50 horses at out rescue.
We took in 35 new horses, of these 5 were joint rescues and 5 were back to be re-homed.
We placed a total of 25 horses into new homes, 5 as joint rescues, and 2 will stay with me.
We lost 3 of our horses, they are in forever green pastures...

We still have 25 horses left at the rescue. Of these 7 are permanent residents or adopted by myself or a volunteer.

That leaves us 18 animals in need who need to be re-homed.

Here are the horses in need, please help us by sponsoring, donating or adopting. each one re-homed allows us to help another. The adoption fees are minimal, and retired horses are free.

Okay finally some updates, The 4 horses from Fallon are doing well, Storm is moving around better, having recovered from an injury to her right hind leg, ? during transport, or maybe cast herself in her stall. The swelling has resolved, and she is moving around well. Her mood and appetite are good and she is putting on weight. Asia too has put on weight we are unsure on the belly, time will tell if we are looking at need for more worming or a baby in the future. The dappled grey Misty has gained weight nicely, and more friendly as well. Rita has no shortage of appetite and eats 4+ flakes a day. No signs of strangles, however we think maybe there was either a carrier on the neighbors property or some shedding from these or perhaps the other horses that came from Fallon and the cleaning of the trailer on site led to the main herd having been exposed. No matter how it has come about there has been a positive test and confirming culture on our Monroe. There have been several other horses with mild case of runny noses and one with a cough. On advice of our vet we are maintaining a quarantine of our entire rescue herd to limit any exposure through horses adopted out. Our pending adoptions simply will stay with us until there are no longer any horses with signs of illness.
For the horses and donkey coming to us from having been abandoned on the foreclosed property, they for the most part will be held offsite. Over the weekend they were all transported to Lone Oak Rescue. As usual we have no background on the horses and for this bunch it's a total guess as to training and behavior. The bay mare haltered easily and walked into the trailer, and her filly followed. The buckskin mare, the roan and the donkey were free loaded as a group without incident. The two larger horses were the biggest challenge, and are a big part of the reason this update comes 2 days after the move. The Grey who has been named Sasha, has trust issues, and the buckskin, who has been named Samson has no fear nor much respect. Together they decided to go through/over a fence panel vs walking into the trailer, which was just a bad idea, especially because I was on the other side of the panel. Of course both the panel and I were knocked over by their 2000+ pounds. Thankfully there are no broken bones here, (gotta love the ER at midnight on a Saturday night) but my mobility and use of my right arm are going to be limited for a while. Yesterday only Sasha made it home as Samson panicked in the trailer, broke his halter and scraped himself up a bit coming out of the trailer, needless to say he was totally unreachable after that and we let him rest for the night. Thankfully it was Kathryn to the rescue today, she was able to get past Samson "shutting down" when it came to pressure. After over an hour of working him he got into the trailer, he was unloaded and then loaded again in just a few minutes. The battle of wills was quite apparent, but thankfully this was not Kathryn's first time down this path, and he was finally able to get the idea of the right answer was to give to the pressure. He obviously not been handled in a very long time, and has a long ways to go, but through everything he never demonstrated any dangerous behavior. We think he is a large foundation quarter horse, and for an experienced horse person he is going to be a great horse.
This next week or so will be time to feel out the others and see what they do or do not know, but several we expect to find homes for quickly, We believe they are mustang or quarter/mustang crosses. Please watch both Facebook and Petfinder for updates and pictures.

This is a hard job some days more so than others, but the goal and reason we do this makes it worth the struggle. A huge thank you to Kathryn and her husband for coming out today, not only did they help with the horse, but changed my flat tire as well. Thank you to Vicki, Candice, Winnie, Erin, Andrea, Lindsey and Cherie as well as those husbands who joined helping feed, clean, gather and transport horses. Your help is tremendous and I couldn't do this without your help, so once again, Thank you.

We are looking for volunteers to help behind the scenes, we are looking for a couple of individuals who have experience and know how in certain areas including with computer and web work in general, as well as fund raising, secretarial assistance and general public relations. We are looking for a minimum 6 month commitment to become part of our board. If you think you can be of assistance please contact us, these are voluntary positions and there is no wage, however mileage and materials used to support our rescue are tax deductible expenses . Hello everyone,
Time for some more updates. The transport of our mares was not able to go through as expected due to bad weather in the mountains. The horses were all held down south where Doug lives, (a great transport man/crew). From there several horses have found homes, we are expecting that any remaining horses to make it to the rescue this weekend. We will bring in others from the holding facility in Fallon when the weather allows. In all we expect there to be a full barn again.
We are looking at various horses, so cannot post which ones will arrive just yet. It is exciting to know that there will soon be little ones so admire and find forever homes.
This too means increased demands physically and financially as well. We are looking for barn moms and dads to make a personal commitment to a specific horse at the rescue, help that horse while they are with us... We are starting a program in which our barn parents can come and visit and help on a regular scheduled basis, likely a Sunday. If you are interested in this please contact us. It means a commitment of 1-3 hours a week to come help care for that specific horse.

Our volunteer hours are still needed and days are always fewer in the winter, but we still are looking for help. If you have contacted in the past and either have not heard back or you've volunteered in the past and have lost touch, please email us again. Most all of the responding is done by myself but between working at the rescue, family and my regular jobs, sometimes emails get missed, and if that has happened to you I apologize.
Since the rescue has gotten much busier we are bringing more persons on board to help with the many demands of the rescue. If you have an interest in being one of our supporters behind the scenes, we have a need for an assistant with our website and email, a handyman for projects at the ranch, and persons to assist with processing applications and follow ups after adoption. Please contact us if you want to fill one of these positions, we do ask for a 6 month minimum commitment.

Just a quick update, our pregnant mares from the Fallon feedlot rescue are expected in this afternoon. Look for pictures and information to be posted shortly.
We will be looking for persons to become "barn moms and dads" this entails committing to coming to the rescue a minimum of 1 day a week and assist with the maintenance of the quarantine/ foaling barn. We will ask you to commit to one mare and (following foaling), her foal with their individual care. The actual handling of the mare will depend on the horse. We ask you be an experienced horse person and be available a minimum one day a week. Interested person please email for more details.
We also are in need of financial sponsorship of horses, please consider a regular donation towards a horse in need, even the smallest donations help us care for the horses. Go to our pay pal link for easy setup of sponsorship.
We are still looking for local individuals to help with feeding/cleaning mornings and evenings. Also we have a need for someone with computer experience to assist with maintenance of the website and our upcoming newsletter.
Rescue is not about one person, but rather a group of individuals working together for the benefit of the horses. If you are able to make a contribution towards the rescue, be it physical or financial, please consider doing do. With your help we can accomplish so much more.

This past week has brought more good news, we have an adoption on our Macy, staying close as she is being adopted by one of our volunteers, Congratulations Vicki.
Mia has an adoption pending as well, we expect to see her go out in a week or so to her new home with Lillian in Central California.
Shadow is going to Southern California and his buddy Kalib may join him in the New Year. We know Aisling is going to provide a great home.
Our 3 fillies Fanci, Daisy and Rayna went home to Vivian and Luis in northern California where they will share a piece of paradise in the beautiful country side. I have to share a picture my daughter took during the trip, a great picture of the Russian river with the afternoon sun shining down creating an amazing photo.

We are still looking for people to help sponsor and support our incoming mares and their babies. Please help us by donating towards their transport home and their care. We will be sharing a flyer soon, in which you can help support the rescue with some great deals on horsey gift items, just in time for the upcoming holidays. Get some shopping done early and help support our incoming mares and their expectant babies.

Volunteer day thanks

The weather did co-operate and we were able to get several things done today at the rescue. A huge thank you to Hannah, Mitchel, Alison and Jennifer for their help in re-organizing and clean up. Due to projects already completed by Elisa and Josh we were able to move items into our little office, and reclaim a stall that had become the work/feed room. Our feed now secure under the same roof as our hay, again thanks to Elisa and Josh for finishing up our hay storage. Also completed by them earlier this week was the back wall of our barn, so is nice and cozy for the horses out of both the rain and wind.
Feeding and cleaning are never ending chores and thanks to Candice and Stephanie for helping out there as well.
Today went by in a hurry, but thanks to everyone who was able to come for helping to accomplish so much. This rescue could not run without your generous donations of time and effort, so again my thanks and appreciation.

For some reason we have lost numerous emails in our G mail and cannot retrieve and therefore respond. In particular the person looking for a riding horse for their father/grandfather(your Tb mare had a foal this spring), the individual looking for a trail horse and the person inquiring about our Arabian. i received your emails today but now cannot retrieve. It is amazing what has been done.... all 68 of the feedlot horses have been saved and will be moved to a safe location Thursday.

Of this bunch 6 will be coming to Lone Oak. We know that 2 are pregnant, one is due very soon, and another not too far off. All of these mares will be assessed by a vet to estimate gestational age and estimate a delivery date. As much as I love babies I am hoping the rest are not in foal. I have already experienced the tragedy of losing a foal from a malnourished mare and would rather not repeat the experience. These mares need lots of groceries. While waiting for the vet certificates for transport into California we have much to do in preparation.

On Nov 6th we will be having a volunteer day to prepare the barn for the newcomers and prepare other areas for herd to be sheltered in the upcoming months.
Projects we need to have completed include,

#1-Installation of our auto water's in the big barn
(we need an experienced person to connect the plumbing/pipes)
#2- closing off the back wall of the large barn
#3- install fencing around the 40 'shelters
#4- complete end wall for the last shelter
#5-construction of 2 new 12x12 shelters
#6- re-configure 3 pens
#7- general cleanup/mucking

If you are able to attend please email us with "Nov 6 volunteer day" in the title. We will send out confirmation and directions. Please remember to print and bring your liability release. You need a new one if it has been over a year since you've been out.

If you can please help with bringing your own tools, especially any power tools/cords.
I am excited and look forward to having you out for this long over due volunteer day. Please remember to email us if you plan to attend.

If you are unable to come out, please help us in donating to the rescue. We are in great need of funds for their feed and the numerous vet visits we expect to have for moms and babies.
If you are looking to adopt you can apply during their quarantine period, the same applies for a foal adoption. Foals are held at the rescue until weaned.

This mare is due first, we need to have her stall bedded, the stress of the move could put her in labor.
this mare will foal next, I expect it will a black and white foal since she was exposed to a black and white stud.

This buckskin mare looks in nice shape so am hoping she is not pregnant, will know soon
This poor baby is so thin, I hope she is not pregnant, rather hope this is a gelding.

The horse in this photo coming to us is the black mare, unknown if pregnant, but exposed to the same stud.
The mare from this group coming to us is the palomino, she is hiding but believe she has a blaze and hind white socks. I hope she too in not bred, even though palomino paints are beautiful.

Lone Oak has funds for the rescue 0f 4 horses from the Fallon feedlot, They only have until Thursday to raise the money, we have several thousand to go, please help save this herd. $200 per horse is what it costs to get them off the lot. this is an all or none situation, Lone Oak will help with a place to quarantine if you can sponsor, please help and donate what you can, every dollar counts. I am so happy to say 3 of our feedlot babies are going to new homes. Congratulations to Vivian , Luis and their daughter on their adoption of Fanci, Daisy and Rayna. they are bound for a great home in the northern hills of California, where pastures and shade trees await them. In less than an hour Luis had Daisy eating from his hand.... it is great to see a connection in such little time.

Shadow too has a new home pending, we are excited to know he will be spoiled and pampered in southern California, road trip here we come!

As well we have inquiries on several other horses and hope they will find there forever homes soon.

In light of the recent adoptions and the plight of numerous horses, mostly pregnant mares sitting on a feedlot, we are making room at the rescue. Pending sponsors and help with transportation we are making room for 4. 1is a paint gelding, 2 are pregnant mares and quite far along, and the other is an exposed mare and unknown if pregnant or how far along she might be.
I have asked these to be marked and am asking for help with sponsorship and transportation.
The cost to buy them from the kill buyer is $200 per horse, please help if you can.

The time is running out, the feedlot has an offer to take the whole lot to Mexico, so we have to act fast to save what we can. please spread the word, if you cannot rescue please donate to the rescue of one that we can help.

Fall Placements

These past few weeks have been busy our barn has been cleared of any quarantine, and we have been able to move horses to their new homes.
Pearl, Shawnee and Kay have been blessed to have found great new homes, thank you all for opening your hearts and homes to a rescue horse. We look forward to hearing news and seeing pictures of you all together.
We have some pending adoptions as well, I look forward to introducing our herd to their prospective new owners this weekend.
We are still looking for retirement homes for our Senior mare and Mule, we would like to see them go out together, If you can give them a home please let us know. Sponsoring them at your site is tax deductable as well.

This summer we have not had as many volunteer days, but have 2 planned for November.

With winter fast approaching, costs are up and demand for hay is up along with the price. Our pastures are greening up, but we still have numerous horses in the barn, The cost of a bale averages $14. Please help with a donation of a bale or two this month. We currently feed almost 3 bales a day to our 13 horses not on pasture. We also supplement our senior horses and our growing fillies, and appreciate donations of any type of bagged feed.

We are still looking for barn moms and days to come help clean groom and just give some TLC to our horses, as well as experienced people to help with chores. You must be over 18, local and available for morning 7-8am or evening 4-6 pm feeds and have your own transportation for this activity. Please email us if you are able to help.

I have good news to share, we have the vet clearance for our barn. The test results for strangles have all come back negative. Our little mare Mi Carina, is doing well, still on antibiotics for the respiratory infection she has, but she is bright, nickering at us when we enter the barn. From all of the handling and ordeal she has had she understands we are not here to harm her and now is easily approached. This afternoon I led her around by her halter and groomed her. She loves the attention leaned into me and kept tucking her head into my arm. The vet exam puts her closer to 3, so we don't expect her to be a big gal, more of pony sized. With her personality emerging it is perfect she will be suitable size and temperament for children.

Now that we no longer have a hold on the barn, there are several horses that will be going to new homes, we are happy to say, Kay, Shawnee and Pearl all have new homes waiting for them.
We have numerous inquiries on various horses and hopefully there are several more adoptions coming up, so watch for more updates coming soon.....

This past week was our scheduled vet day, unfortunatly we have a sick filly. Little Mi Carina had a high fever, and 2 days later developed respiratory symptoms and was quite distressed. Our little gal took a trip to Davis where she is currently being cared for. initial exam suggests a pneumonia, as well as an infection that we are ruling out for strangles. All horses in the barn are now back on quarantine until we can be sure no others have any illness of any sort. I have consulted with the vets at Davis and we are watching this little one more closely as she came in underweight and her immunity is simply not as strong as it should be. Good news that her blood work showed only an infection and nothing more serious. If her tests come back positive we will be testing our pasture herd over the next several weeks to check for strangles. Any horse who is not in the best of health to begin with is likely to become more ill like little Carina, but for the most part they do not require treatment and once they have become ill they develop an immunity and are unlikely to become ill again. We are taking all precautions at the ranch so until we can be sure we do not have any ill horses adopted out so we will not be letting any horses out nor bringing any in until clearance from our vet.

Mi Carina's trip to the hospital exposed her to all sorts of new things she has numerous examiners, blood tests, injections, ultrasounds, nasal tube and lots of noisy scarey machines rolling around her. She was not confined and stood quietly for everything. Her biggest objection was the alcohol wash for the ultrasounds, even that was only a side step.

We were very proud of this little one who was exposed to so much and took it in stride. It says a lot about her character. The vets estimate her to be more like 2 1/2, so older than the others, so we expect she will stay pony size. She will be available for adoption in a month or two.

Mi Carina will stay the next nights at Davis until she looks like she is on the mend.... the stall charge alone is $150 per night. Thus far her stay is estimated at $1000. Please if you can help us care for her, even the smallest donations add up.
We expect a full recovery with her and will be posting updates as we have them. Thank you everyone for your support.

Fall news...

October has come quickly as has the changing weather. It seems I was just putting on fly spray and here we are putting on rain sheets and checking on winter blankets.
This year we are over capacity and need to place horses before the winter sets.

If you are able to help with sponsorship on or off site please let us know. Life long homes are our goal of course, but we want to ensure it is the right home and the right horse match.
Off site sponsorship means you have the full care and use of that horse and the first option to adopt him or her.
We currently have 22 horses on site, 18 of which are available for adoption. We have 2 pending adoptions. With the winter weather we will be looking for local volunteers to help with cleaning, feeding and grooming of horses, during the wet weather there is little riding, but more time for general handling, ground manners and other ground work.

We are in need of donations of grain and hay to supplement feeding until pasture green up, as well we have fall vet checks and vaccinations.

Updates from the ranch.... here are some pictures of our new intakes...These young fillies all came from the feedlot in Nevada. They have never been around people before so they are unhandled. They are all on quarantine right now as they came through the feedlot, They are from a ranch dispersal of Quarter horses, paints and appaloosas. We are in need of sponsors and homes for these young fillies. They are the perfect age and would be ready to start training come spring.

Below is Mi Carina, she is being sponsored by Christine, she has already become much more accustomed to people and allowing us to touch her and she will take hay from our hands. She is very fine boned, we believe that she may be a quarter/arab. She is a dark grey roan.

This gal we have named Fanci, she is likely 2 years old, she is afraid, but curious at the same time. We have not handled her yet, but she will take a few steps toward me and eat off the flake of hay when I hold it out to her. Fanci needs a sponsor and a home.
This little sweetheart is Tessa, she is about a year and a half. She is being sponsored by myself and will have a home here with me at Lone Oak. Tessa has allowed me to handle her a lot and has accepted with a rope around her neck, back and feet.
This little gal is yet to be named, she has a sponsor pending, she is a sweetheart, and took steps toward me on the first day I entered her pen. She has a small lump in her jaw line which we will have the vet assess, for now she eats well so we are allowing her to settle in. We estimate her to be between a year and 2 years old.

This filly too is between one and two, she is less trusting but very curious. She is very nicely put together and we believe she is full Quarter. She needs a name and a sponsor and a home.
From our previous feedlot we have updates on our mule Jester, he is gaining weight but he still needs muscle. He has the run of the ranch and eats everything and anything. he loves to have his head scratched and to be loved on. The grandson has sat on him and we've led him around. Jester just loves the attention. He is available for adoption.

Rosa is a senior mare, she came in extremely thin and has slowly gained weight and muscle. she is a buddy to Jester, she too has the run of the ranch, these two are supplemented along with pasture and both Jester and Rosa will continue to need supplements to maintain their weight.

I know there hasn't been as many postings and happenings at the rescue this summer, but we are hard at work....

I want to share that we have 4 of our horses at or completed training with Dina Cabral.

It is so exciting to see the huge progress they have made.... and looking forward to finding them new homes.

Jake is at home post training and is doing wonderful, an occasional spook in place and nervous at times, but so much better. I have ridden Jake myself several times since he has been home and he was wonderful, he still needs an experienced rider as we want to build on his new experiences with a confident rider. He has even been roped off of and worked on cattle herding .

Kay has inquiries on her for adoption, she is mellow and easy to ride, she is home in just 2 weeks.

Kalib is under saddle after 2 weeks of ground work, looking much more relaxed than I thought he would. I should not be surprised, as he is such a smart boy, he has lots of energy, but did not even try to buck even once. Check out his video, he is so handsome!!!

Mia is making slower progress, but she too is under saddle. videos of her are pending.

Back at the ranch Jp is making a great recovery. His foot fracture continues to look better with each radiograph. He is now on hand walking and in a 12x24 stall, and remains sound at the moment. Time will tell if he will be a riding horse again, we are hoping so... next update in a few weeks.

Our Feed lot rescues are doing well, and need to find their homes. Rosa and Jester have put on weight but still have muscle to regain.... they have vastly improved from when they arrived. Our hot headed boy Adonis has calmed down.... he is a handful on the ground but very responsive under saddle, energetic, and soooo smooth to ride.

Pearl and Shawney did drop weight on pasture but were put back on supplements and are regaining nicely.... Shawney may have her new home..... pearl is looking and feeling great, she needs a new home and a job!

I have said we would not be taking in new horses but could not say no to the babies at risk..... so there are 3 yearling fillies to arrive at Lone Oak, a paint, a roan and an appaloosa.

I am looking for sponsors for them.... they have little to no handling so will take some time before they are available for adoption. we are hoping they can be within 60-90 days, the first 30 will be under quarantine as they are coming from the feed lot.

The cost just to get them from the feedlot is $225 each plus any holding fees and transportation/vet/farrier costs.... and then we get to start their work
any contributions can be made through the website to our paypal.... please mark the donations for the fillies....
I will post pictures as soon as I can and start the naming process as well.

Please help where you can with any donations to help us prepare for the upcoming winter.... Hay is priced high, but we might be able to get a deal from a local grower..... our goal is to raise enough to buy 300 bales of alfalfa, that should hold us until our pastures green up.... current prices are good at $12 a bale.

It seemed like summer was never going to arrive and now August is here and soon to be half over... and our summer feels like it has come and gone. We were not able to hold our volunteer days as we have in the past but hope to be back on track soon. It may have seemed like a quiet summer for our volunteers, but behind the scenes is anything but quiet. Being a small rescue there is but a few of us who tend to the many tasks required for running a rescue. Couple hectic personal lives and busy jobs with two computer crashes and a few ranch crisis' and you have more tasks than there are minutes to put them in. Once again I have to thank Joy, Savanah, Vicki and Joey for your help in keeping things running smoothly while Mesha and I juggle.

We are not currently taking in new horses so that we can focus on recovery, training and placement of our current horses. We do maintain a safety net for our placed horses.

Some of our horses are still in process of recovery, others ready and looking for their forever homes. To help in that end we have 3 horses out in training with Dina Cabral, they are Jake, Mia and Kay.

Jake has done very well and will be back at the rescue this next week where he will continue to be ridden frequently. Please check out his videos on our Facebook page. For those of you who met the spooky boy he was when he first came to us, you will be amazed at him now. At one time we couldn't take a glove off around him and now here he is with ropes flying around him and he simply stands there. It goes to show what time and patience do to heal. He is available for adoption.

Mia is now under saddle and as expected with a newly started horse, will take a little longer before she is ready, but progressing well in her training.

Kay has done amazing, she is under saddle and she is showing a more gentle and willing attitude. She is a sweetheart and does love the attention.

Mia and Kay are both available for adoption post training, adoption applications can be made prior to their completion. Watch for videos of their training on our Facebook page.

There is availability for additional training for both of these mares as well as any of our horses through their current trainer. Watch for more information and availability for open training opportunities with Dina.

Our next scheduled horse for refreshing his training is Shadow, Shadow is a younger Arabian gelding, he is suited for an experienced rider who knows the Arabian breed. Shadow is well broke, but has not had regular riding these past few months.

Photos of the progress of our recovering horses will be coming soon, they need to be recovered from the crashed computer. We are happy to say that all are progressing well towards a healthy normal state with great spirits. If you would like to be a sponsor home for one of our horses still in recovery, please contact us. Also needed are retirement homes for Rosa and Jester. These two do love each other and would do well placed together.

A new update on a few of our horses.... we currently have 3 horses out with the trainer. they will be available for adoption or continued training in approx 3 weeks. We are happy to report things are going well, Jake and Mia are both being ridden and doing well. Kay has been started and is making great progress. more updates and pictures to follow.

For those of you behind the scenes, thank you for your support during my move. There have been fewer volunteer days due to the family crisis, but we are hoping to settle into regular days once again in the near future. Thank you all for your patience and support.

This blog has been quiet for too long and for that I apologize. For those of you who are in frequent contact you know my family increased by 4 and it has been a struggle. Many thanks for the great supporters that I have I could not have been able to make it this far without you. This rescue is a small one comprised of individuals like myself with full time jobs and families and many obligations to juggle along with taking care of the rescue business.
Things are slowly coming back together, both computers going down did not help the situation, again, my apologies but soon there will be photos to share.

As for the herd, our sponsored rescues have gone home to their owners and we have 2 of our 4 still in process of recovery, the mule Jester and mare Rosa are slowly gaining their weight back and roaming the hills in the pasture. They are available for sponsorship and recovery homes. The gelding Adonis is a spirited boy, he is well trained and looking for a home with an experienced rider simply because he is a strong horse, we are working on better ground manners. Queenie went out to her new home and is doing well.

Peppy has gone out to his new home and we have several others who have inquiries on. Due to job transfers and family illness we have had 2 horses come back to the rescue, they are Mia and Macy. There are already inquiries on the both of them.

It is my hope that we place 3-4 horses in the next two weeks to enable us to attend the next auction. The auction date is set for july 23. We are hoping to rescue directly from the auction yard and not let them get as far as the kill buyers lot, nor let any of our rescue dollars end up in his pocket.

Yesterday was road trip time, Lordy went to his new home, at the end of the long road was a wonderful home waiting with Jean and Pat. Lordy is the perfect match for Pat, we know he will be spoiled with his large stall and paddock and many sandy trails and arenas to work in.

Just a quick update this morning.... our quarantine is up and Bo and Jax have gone to their new home with Sally. Lordy goes to his new home today and we have 3 possible new adoptions..... we are happy to be finding some wonderful new homes for these great horses.

Thank you all for your efforts and support. Weather it be helping feed and muck, or with a phone call passing our name and info on our horses to interested persons, we are successful in our efforts because of you.

June has arrived, though the weather seems more like March, one day sunny the next is cold, windy and raining. Rain or shine, this week draws our quarentine to a close, and Bo and Jax will he headed home. Also going out will be Lordy. There are new visitors coming to see the herd and hopefully more new homes will be the result. Our volunteer days have been few with bad weather and the Quarentine most barns have been under, but with summer vacations about to be upon us we hope to be seeing more of you again soon.
We hope to have an individual working with us to help with training needs, more news to come. We welcome experienced individuals to contact us if interested in our training needs.

This week was another busy one, we were proud to be invited to the Fallon Elementary school carnival. The kids loved meeting our ponies Tina and Rio and they loved the attention. Despite the wind, balloons loud speakers and the crowd, Tina and Rio stood patiently for many little petting hands.

We enjoyed our little visit and we were able to inform more people what a rescue is all about.

She was a little unsure about everything, but calmly accepted all that was new. We are sure she will be a great one for a therapeutic program. She is very friendly and patient.
With quarantine drawing to a close was time to see how Queenie was, we are happy to say she is a very sensitive little mare, and a pleasure to ride.

We were pleasantly surprised by our golden boy Adonis today. He showed us he has a wonderful manner under saddle. He is a well trained gaited horse. Out of saddle he is full of energy and is suited to a strong rider who is accustomed to handling a high energy horse.
Christines trail ride on Peppy is pictured below, they were joined by Joy and Savannah on Rajah and Cass. Peppy still needs to gain weight so it was a short ride. He is slowly gaining his weight back and will be regaining his muscle as well. with short work sessions. Christine is doing a great job with him and Peppy really loves the attention.
Jean took Lordy for a ride and he quickly won her over, we hope to be taking him to his new home soon.

Here are some of our latest updates, we are happy to report JP is doing great, radio graphs today showed a huge difference, he is healing well, he is now is a less rigid shoe. He will now get limited periods of time where he is out of his 12x12 stall. we will post his new pictures when they are available.

The quarantine period for our 2 joint rescues Bo and Jax are half way completed. Both boys looking good, behaving well for the farrier, but not impressed with their pyrantel. Our 4 Lone Oak horses are doing well. all have adjusted well to regular feeds, our big boy Jester loves his mash, as do Rosa and Queenie.

Pearl and Peppy have adjusted to being in a herd, still sticking pretty close to each other, but allowing there to be separation. Peppy was taken on a short ride and proved to be a very sensitive boy, behaving well being ridden in western bosal. He seemed to enjoy the ride, stepping out with energy, his ears perked up, living up to his name "Peppy"

There are current inquiries on several horses, including Lordy, Peppy, JD, Jake, and Keeva. We hope to place several soon allowing us help more at risk.

Sorry everyone for the delay in this post, It has been an exhausting week. I know many of you are anxious to see what we were able to accomplish. Thank you everyone who helped us to bring these horses to a safe place, your contributions made this possible, and will bring them back to health. We brought home 6 this trip and here they are.

I will start with our now adopted horses, the wonderful couple who wanted to be a part of this rescue had their hearts won by two beautiful geldings. Patricia and her husband have sponsored their purchase as well as their quarantine at Lone Oak. Both geldings are in need of farrier care, as they have been sadly neglected for some time. Thankfully they were fed well. The sorrel gelding, names Second Chance, has very short chipped hooves, likely they were overgrown and then chipped off pieces and this is the result. He appears to be quite uncomfortable when he initially starts moving but then improves, we hope he will be sound once his feet grow to accommodate his large frame.

The other gelding is a beautiful paint, he is yet to be named. we are searching for name as handsome as he is. His feet are much worse, and he is not lame, but believe he will be during his recovery. The ligaments are going to need to adjust as his hooves slowly grow and they return to a natural upright position.
The Lone Oak sponsored horses are

She is a dark bay mare, in her mid teens well broke and just needing a little more weight and a loving home. Once her quarantine period is finished she will be available for adoption. She is the perfect family trail horse
Rosa
She is a Red roan mare in her late teens, suffering from all around neglect. She will take some time to regain the muscle and fat that was wasted away. Her feet too are overgrown and have chipped off in chunks. She has the sweetest disposition and enjoyed my grandchildren who have fallen in love with her all reaching in to pet and groom her. Her grooming session revealed an even thinner mare, I expect that once she is at a healthy weight again she will quickly find a family home. She is truly that "babysitter" horse that is perfect for a family with little ones.

Jester is the sweetest mule.... I cannot imagine anyone resisting his charm. He is very thin and in need of many calories. Even this fuzzy coat can't hide that. He will need many a day with good feed to regain his weight. Thankfully his feet are not overgrown.... Jester is broke both to ride and pack

Lastly is a very energetic gelding.yet to be named, we would like your help here.... one suggested has been Adonis. We believe he was recently gelded. approx 12-15. is broke to ride. He is gaited, possibly some walker in him as he does move in a walkers "pace" He is very pushy on the ground, he was actually being led to a truck to "complete the load" when I asked to see him.
He will be available following his quarantine period, and will require a very experienced owner.

Thank you everyone for your generosity. Every dollar will bring a horse to a safe place and bring them back to health so they can have a forever home. Thankfully 3 of these last 4 are not neglected, and now not at risk of slaughter. The 4th, Sammy will take some time to put a little weight on and regain his energy and spirit, but believe he will do so quickly under Monicas love and attention.

We are expecting to bring in the new horses tomorrow. It is Mothers day, but I see myself as mom to my herd so is fitting to bring who I can, home to safety. It is expected that all 4 of the horses taken in will be placed with their sponsors, 2 are now going to be quarantined at their new home with Monica which gives us room to help more. They are all doing well, have adjusted to the new barn, and feed, a little colicky episode for one which settled quickly. All now happily munching and watching the other horses in pasture, I know they would love to be out there roaming the grassy hills. Here are a few pictures to share., In order they are, Sammy, Jax and Bo, and our unnamed buckskin gelding. His new mom will be naming him tomorrow.

One who has transitioned to pasture is Pearl, She still has a little weight to put on, but will do so quickly with grazing all day. Pearl is still really attached to her buddy Peppy, so she does not wander far. She is very buddy sour, but she will break herself of this by being able to return to his paddock whenever she needs to reassure herself. She has wondered to meet the neighbor horses as well as the herd, but still keeps herself separated from them. It will take time.
Peppy still remains inside, needing much more calories. He is the friendliest boy, with constant nickers whenever he sees you.
Pearl was ridden as well, a slow evaluation, having been at least a year and a half since she was last rode. Taking that into consideration she did very well, she is full of energy and will need an experienced rider. She will now be available for adoption.

4 safe horses ......

Today was one full of tension, fears, excitement and disappointment. Following just a few days of dozens of messages, emails and phone calls between 3 women, we converged with the common goal of taking in horses off a lot and giving them a safe place to call home. Kathryn and Christine joined our efforts as well, and together we experienced first hand the difficult task of choosing who to save.
There were many with lots numbers from the auction, many with faces marked up, some with superficial leg wounds. There was no shelter from the sun, some were without water.
Many had obviously been well cared for, shiny coats, still in shoes. I am sure their owners did not know the risk the horses faced passing through an auction yard. Would they end up on one of the trucks we saw, and be destined for a horrific fate or find themselves in a safe home with a private buyer. There were also those not so well cared for with long hooves, and horribly underweight obvious even under a matted winter coat. Many we were told were spoken for, and we could not buy, including many young foals, and the older mares. We took 4 from the many pens, thankful we could assure their safety, and promised ourselves we would return as soon as possible for the next 4. We expect to do so soon....

His disposition is quiet, his affect is almost depressed, we hope to see him perk up and show us his personality. With lots of love and some groceries I am sure he will show us more of his sweet personality.
The final horse we brought back was sponsored by Monica as well, he may already have a home.... He is a beautiful Buckskin gelding, yet to be named- I cannot imagine letting him go.... nor the fate he might have had.

This afternoon we had 2 sweet horses come to Lone Oak. They were surrendered to the rescue by family members of the owner who had passed away. One is a grey Arabian gelding and the other a bay thoroughbred mare. Both are broke to ride. They are in need of groceries and are behind on routine care. We expect a full and speedy recovery and quick adoptions of these two sweethearts. Both are in need of sponsors, please help us with their recovery with a partial or full sponsorship

Things have been very busy for us at the rescue. We have had many visitors, new volunteers, new adoptions and of course projects. We were fortunate to have a great group of people from Habitat for Humanity come out and help us with one of our projects. We are completing an extra large stall and paddock to be available for foaling, and recovery from injuries that would require stall rest. The hardest part being the framing and roofing was completed in a matter of a couple of hours. We expect to finish the sides and run this next sunday. With this beautiful weather I had a chance to get some new pictures of our herd. They are all getting plump of this grass and are in need of lots of exercise...and need to find their new homes soon!!

I had a hand bringing in the ponies from my grandson Orian, Orian is 7 and loves to help. As you can see Rio quite loves that his handler is his size and he nuzzled into him. Tina of course was not far away from her buddy, they are inseparable. Pictured below are our 3 new arrivals. The two miniature horses are both geldings, they are Cash and Butterscotch, the paint mare is Shawney. Look for more details on them on our adoption page. They are all available for adoption.

Since becoming involved in rescue I have heard many stories of how people and as a result, their animals have come to their current circumstances. The road we are on seems smooth, plans are made with results anticipated... then suddenly that road makes an unforeseen turn, we find ourselves in a new set of circumstances, scrambling to get our bearings and figure out where this new road leads. Homes are lost, jobs are changed, parents split up and families are altered, and as a result the physical, financial and emotional demands change too. All of these things happen every day, most of us know of someone or have experienced such events ourselves. The rescue and I are no exception. While we all do our best navigating our personal daily twists and turns, we need to remember the ones who are without choices but are affected no less.

This next week we will be bringing home 3 such animals who are the fallout of one of those unexpected turns. They have not suffered neglect or abuse, they are simply losing their home and need a new family. There are two mini ponies and a sweet paint mare who is perfect for casual rides or for the childrens first horse. At the rescue there are many others still waiting for their new homes, some spunky and green others mellow and suited for family or trail horses.

If you are able, please help us so that we can help others, small donations add up to make a big difference. We are preparing for our next farrier visit, at $35 ea and corrective shoeing for 2 horses, the price tag is over $600. Before long too there will be spring vaccinations and of course there is always intake costs for our new horses and ongoing costs of recovery. Sponsorship on and off site is available and hay, grain and monetary donations are needed the most.

I started the rescue because it is in my nature to help. I have met many who are of like mind and have been generous working with me and I am so very grateful. It is not just the dollar or the hour donated, it is much more, the support and assistance and believing in this cause is invaluable. I could not do this without your support. It seems like so little to say thank you.... but once again, my heart felt thank you.

This has been a busy week, we have received many calls about horses in need, ranging from ponies to green horses and older horses ready to be that family horse for the grand kids or for a loving retirement home. Each of these cases we have concerned owners unable to continue care due to physical or financial constraints. Today I spent 5 hours driving to locations and evaluating horses. With all of these cases we look at how we can help and still balance their needs with the needs of the horses currently at the rescue. We would love to say yes without hesitation but we can't always do so.

Our abilities physically and financially can only stretch so far. We are very grateful for our volunteers but there is always more tasks than hands. We are currently looking for persons to do pre and post adoption site checks and reference checks. Our adoptions range from local to several hours from the bay area, so even if you are not local, please feel free to contact us. If you have computer/website experience and are interested in working closely with the rescue, we could use an assistant to our webmaster. Regular volunteers at the ranch are still needed to help with daily cleaning and feeding, mostly in the mornings between 8 and 12. For direct handling of the horses we require you to be over 18 and be experienced, but no experience is required to work with us at promotion events. As always monetary donations are needed the most as well as individual sponsorship and foster homes, all of which have the added benefit as tax deductible donations.

We know that this spring will bring out yet more horses who have suffered a hard winter, and we want to be able to help. Please think of what you can do to help us help the horses.

Today we had a new arrival at the ranch. A young dappled grey Thoroughbred gelding. A quick research of his tattoo told us he is registered as Sterling image. He is 7 years old, he will be 8 this April. He raced for a brief time with earnings of over $60,000 in his 7 wins. We are looking for a barn name for him, and are open to suggestions. Jessie has been suggested
He was known to be moody, aggressive and temperamental, but we saw none of that today. He walked into the trailer without hesitation, and did the same upon arrival at the ranch. He calmly walked on lead, taking in the countryside, acting like he had been here a million times. He greeted a couple of the horses, ears forward and with nickers.
As you can see from the pictures, he needs a bath. It will be interesting to see how much is dirt and stains and how much is his coloring. The dirty winter coat hides how thin he is, more so than the pictures show and it will take some time before he is an adequate weight.
Along with an adequate diet, he is in great need of dental work. Our vet will be out to examine him and bring him up to date with care. We'll keep you up to date on his progress.

Today was another volunteer day and we had a new visitor to the ranch. Krissie was at one time the owner of Cassanova. It was obvious how much she cared about him. After having to sell him for financial reasons, Cass was not cared for well, and she was part of a group who helped buy him back. Cassanova is the sweetest horse, and he lives up to his name. He has a new girl under his spell, Joy and her daughter Savannah are adopting Cass. Here are a few pictures of them.

Jakes Day

As some of you know Jake has been with us for the past year and change. He came with severe trust issues. While being ridden the saddle billet broke, the saddle slid, the rider fell off and Jake ran around terrified until the saddle came off. It was a traumatic event for both the rider and Jake. Jake was severely head shy, throwing his head up easy 30 or more times in a minute. Just dropping a glove would send him into a panicked run.

It has taken a long time to get to the point where he spooks in place, trusting now that he is safe. Still he has some fears but you can see he is trying not to give into that instinct of flight. Today was a wonderful day. We were doing so well, that I decided to try driving him. Sometimes change is a good thing. Jake was busy trying to figure out how I was directing him from 15 feet behind him, so busy in fact he forgot to be afraid. I was behind him, the long lines swinging around him, touching his legs, sides and even catching his tail, he ignored all of it, focused on the directions I was giving him. We spent a good 20 minutes in the round pen, walking, turning, stopping and then progressing to a trot, none of which set off his panic button.

Today was another sunny day and work continued on the ranch. Many horses worked in the round pen, and I am happy to report all did well. There has been so much progress on Jake, Kalib and my personal horse Zaida, all who came to us with serious trust issues, bolting, rearing and head shy, to name a few. All working well now off lead and joining up well in the round pen, nicely responding to voice commands, and standing their ground with blankets, ropes and lunge lines hanging off them.

While we worked, Tina and Rio had the run of the ranch, it was entertaining to Jake and I as we watched the neighbor horse running back and forth trying to figure out Tina. He was snorting and running away, but then would come back, so curious about this tiny horse. Is funny how such a little horse can cause such confusion to another.
It was a great day, how I wish I did not have to leave, but the paying job was calling...

JP is doing well, moving well on the injured foot, we will do another set of XRays in about 2 weeks to see how the healing is coming along. He enjoying some pampering from several girls this past weekend and of course enjoyed some sunshine too. He did manage to find the muddy spots to roll in outside, I think he just wanted to get another hour of grooming.

The weekend was a wonderful one. We had a great group of visitors, some new, some returning. Chores were completed, our big barn now has a matted isle, as do the stalls in our 4 stall barn. There were horses groomed and exercised and many others who simpley ran the hills enjoying the sunshine. I expect great pictures and video coming soon to share with you.

Today Mia went to her new home. All went well and she settled in quickly.
Macy is there as well, however in a separate barn. We decided to turn her out to stretch her legs, unknown that Mia could see part of the arena. Soon there was quite the racket as they called back and forth to each other and Macy ran around like crazy calling for her mom. Of course we then turned them out together where they were so pleased to be together. Macy is 8 months old tomorrow, and to be reunited with Mom was a perfect way to celebrate.

Despite the fog, backed up traffic and a cool morning Robyn and Sam joined me at the rescue to do some chores.
JP was given a nice long grooming session by the girls while I did mucking. We are happy to report that JP is moving much better and looks more comfortable in general.
Mia too had a long grooming session. During her turnout she had rolled in the muddy area of course, so she was quite the mess, both mane and tail tangles held onto little balls of mud. After looking nice and shiny we braided her mane and tail, of course she managed to shake out one of the braids within the hour.
Rio and Tina got their turn, smaller bodies but 3x the hair. They thanked the girls by promptly rolling around once they were turned out.
The rest of the herd is out on pasture, but found their way to us, somehow just knowing the girls has carrots to share. It was an enjoyable morning...

What could be a better to start 2011 than to announce the adoption of 2 of our horses.
Today Macy went home to her new home, soon to be followed by her momma Mia.
It seems like just a short time ago we were celebrating her arrival.... and today she took her first trip alone. Macy traveled very well and settled in quickly.
We are so happy they have been placed together. Congratulations Janvi and Yogi. I know they have found a wonderful home with you and am happy to say close enough I get to visit.
I wanted to share a few pictures to remember our journey to this happy day.

A very Happy New Year to all. 2010 was a busy year for me. For those of you who have been out to the rescue you know it is not fancy. Simply barns corrals and horses but still there is much to do. With winter rains of extra hands become few but the chores increase. The daily care as well as vet and farrier visits are handled by myself. Currently there are 16 horses to care for.

Added to the daily routine is the care of JP. One morning about 2 weeks ago JP was found to be severely lame. The vet was called and after ruling out an abscess we discovered he had fractured his coffin bone. The fracture is on the front left, and the coffin bone is fractured into 3 pieces. The consultation with the surgeon leaves us hopeful JP will make a full recovery. Meanwhile he is on strict stall rest for a minimum of 3 months, possibly longer. Until then he is in a custom shoe designed to immobilize his foot to allow healing along with pain medication.
JP has a wonderful personality and we are hoping he will come through this. We are in need of individuals to contribute to his care physically and financially. Each shoeing is $75 for that foot alone and vet visits and Xrays are required every 4 weeks. JP is very much a people horse and loves to have company and to be groomed. We are currently looking for a stall buddy for him.

Sunday Dec 19, a wonderful little female lab(?mix) wondered onto the rescue. She poked her head into the barn and looked very lost. She was cold, wet and hungry but looks to be in good health. There have been many rainy and cloudy days but the work continues. Thanks to our great volunteers who help with tasks from construction to cleaning stalls and grooming horses. Breaks in the weather have let us enjoy some riding and continue basic training.
Kalib has made great strides responding well to even new hands,showing us he does indeed understand the lessons.

Mya is under saddle and doing well, she has a potential new home.

Mia too has had visitors and her adoption is pending.

Macy has grown tremendously and at 7 months stands at 13 hands, we are expecting her to be a tall girl. She has moved out of Mia's stall and now shares quarters with "Uncle Duke", my own gelding who loves babies.
Lordy is back at the rescue, and enjoying the pastures, as well as our rides. He is a treasure,and all adore him. Here he is pictured with Liz. We expect to be offering day camps in the new year with Liz assisting. Liz currently offers riding lessons for both able and disabled riders. Today was a beautiful day at the rescue......blues skies and sunshine shone over our hills and our horses grazed on new grass. JD is back with the rescue and today he joined the herd for the first time. He is a beautiful boy, and the mares ran around him kicking up their heels. Head and tail held high he snorted a time or two and trotted up the hill to join the herd.

During the night our Macy had an adventure.... the young calves next door had pushed on the fencing and lowered it just right that Miss long legs stepped over it. However the view from the other side of the fence was different.... The top of the fence was higher on that side and so there she spent the night..... 7 handsome black Angus calves kept her company, from a distance of course. Our Macy is quite the energetic filly, and was running around their pasture. On our side Momma Mia stood with Uncle Duke, ( My boy Duke has adopted Macy as his offspring).
It took but a moment to lead Macy to the gate and send her on her way with Momma and Duke, none the worse for wear but a small scratch from the fence. Myself of course... I did fencing to keep curious calves on their side, and all before breakfast.

The winter rains are turning our hills green and the paddocks muddy. We do have a great barn now and all the horses are out of the rain and wind. The barns still need work to ensure the rains stay out, gutters to be hung and auto water and feeders installed, but the horses are happy in their stalls.

We have a new hay storage shed coming soon, and our Foaling barn is underway in preparation for any mare in need this coming spring.

There are many things of beauty in this world, but to see our new 8 stall barn standing, and horses in their new stalls, well it was a beautiful sight to me. Thanks to the great efforts by Jessica, Jacob, Jerell, Bobby and Alec.
Along with their efforts were the great students from De La Salle High School. Many thanks to Nicholas, Will, Blake and Robin, have been putting in hours at the ranch helping to clean, feed and work on our construction projects.
There have been many changes to our set up along the way, but they have all fallen into place nicely. Soon our days filled with construction and planning will be replaced by days full of horse only activities. I thank all of you who have helped us along the way.

The winds are a challenge to us in the past 2 days, we are close to completion of the barn requiring the last of the roofing to be in place. Unfortunately with the wind gusts we are being delayed. The weekend will be one focused on settling all down for the winter. Saturday and Sunday days are open for volunteers.
There has been new donations of tack and blankets, a huge thank you to Winnie who made a special trip to bring us many treasures of saddles, blankets, halters and more. As you settle your own barns for the winter and are going through your tack please consider donating those items no longer needed or wanted. Those items not used by the rescue will be added to out spring tack swap and sale.

We have a new helper for our daily chores and are very pleased. Though she has zero horse experience, she walks around them like she has been with them her whole life. She has taken a liking to Monroe and he to her. It is amazing to see this match come together. She has ridden twice in her life, but she is attracted to one of our biggest boys and a boss in the herd. I look forward to her working with him and riding, as does she. Welcome Elisa.

Yesterdays rains and wind were a reminder of the down side of winter. Blankets and sheets were brought out, horses were sized and dressed. I am hoping we make it through winter with fewer blankets mishaps, but am sure there will be some. JP though it was fun pulling at Maggie's blanket as I dressed her, and when unable to do that, took a hold of her lead in his mouth and held onto it. I think he was tying to help, they are such characters.
We do have a need for smaller blankets , if you have any gathering dust we could sure use them. I am hoping the weather continues to hold off this week as we get the 8 stall completed, we are looking for extra hands on Friday. Please email us if you can join us then.

Today we were blessed with a beautiful day and the help of 3 strong young men from De La Salle High School. They quickly we were able to plot out the site of our new 8 stall barn and started the heavy work of raising the panels. In a short period of time much was accomplished. We are hoping the majority of the panels will be in place by Saturday so we are able to focus on installing the roofing. We are excited to see this barn coming together as it has long been both wanted and needed.

Tonight might be a scary one since it's Halloween, but the day is a beautiful one. There are blue skies and sunshine over the hills at the ranch. The grass is turning those hills green already and they horses are loving it.
The herd was running around and kicking up their heels this morning. After the running around they settled into their little groups, Cass with Mia and Macy; Monroe and Mya; Kalib with Zaida;
and Duke, Jake and Kay a loose trio. JP joined the herd for the first time and joined up with Maggie, they stayed side by side, she is a calm girl providing reassurance to him I'm sure. How I wish I had my camera to share their beauty.

Today the weather is giving us a break, blankets are off, horses are frisky and kicking up their heels. There is already tiny bits of green poking through the ground, a blessing for sure and soon enough the hills will be green.
There is always work to be done, chores are always there and of course horse work. Our three in for recovery are coming along well, JP showing no signs of lameness today,we hope he will be sound shod and soon be available. Kay is going out soon and will make a great little sport horse for someone. Mia and Macy are now available to be adopted either separately or together. Mia is being worked on basic ground work now and she is learning fast.
These young horses offer so much, I invite you to come and meet them. We are fortunate that we do have an offer of a month of professional training to anyone adopting from the rescue, thank you Laura. Please contact us for more information.

It seems like the hot days were never ending and from that we have chilly rains and slippery slopes. Rain sheets are now out and we know the winter blankets will be needed soon enough. WE are in need of smaller sized sheets and blankets. If you have one to spare our Pony Rio and mini Tina are in need.
We are hoping to get our 8 stall barn up before much more rain, extra hands are always welcome. Our goal is for all to have 16 indoor stalls this winter along with one over sized one.
Our projects seem never ending, but progress is being made. Thank you all for your generous help.

Fall is upon us though the weather man thinks its July. There is still much preparation for the upcoming winter rain and cold. Our over sized stall will be ready soon. It will serve as a sick stall and also is large enough for foaling. Our 8 stall barn is scheduled for dismantle and move this next week, we are looking forward to bringing it home.

The quarantine barn will soon be ready. We are looking at going to the auction at the end of the month, if you can help please do so, every dollar can help to save a horse from a terrible fate.

We understand times are hard, and know it will get harder this winter for too many defenseless horses. Please join us in our efforts of rescue and recovery.

Today was another day on the road, checking on several abandoned horses before the barn owner sends them to auction. The kind hearted care of fellow boarders can only go so far when several are abandoned at the same barn. Thankfully there is a group effort to provide care to whom they can, and now thankfully the barn is ready to release them. We are expecting to take in whom we can to help. Please help us however you can, every dollar counts, there is costly vet and farrier care that must be provided upon arrival. Updates and pictures as soon as possible.

On the ranch Kay had another lesson under saddle and did well, slow and steady progress.

We are updating our horse profiles with videos, please let us know if you can help be a camera man/woman.

Today was filled with some great happenings and some clouds with silver linings.
The greatest part of the day was Kay's first rides. After some reviewing ground work Kay sported a saddle and did so well, we climbed aboard. A little confused as to what we were doing up there she stood her ground, literally, but with reassurance all was good she found her legs and away we went. Both myself and her barn mom Caitlin rode with no attempts to buck, bolt or other such nonsense. Kay was a good girl, and we are very proud of her.

The Rescue clean up and construction continues. The landlord removed old panels, buildings and a huge cattle trough from the central rescue site.( Thank you Thank you Thank you Joey) However in the process the water tank sprung a leak, oops ... so the reposition of the tank to preserve water storage seemed like a good idea .... until a water line broke. That would be the cloud... the silver lining is a new modern tank and added water line assess for barns and corrals.
Thank God for handymen like Joey who had everything under control.

We are looking at another day of construction the weekend of 9th/10th. Please join us for barn and horse time. Soon enough all projects will be completed and our only projects will be our horses. Please join us completing projects and getting ready for winter and new horses.

The worst time of the year is about to be on us and too many horses are thrown away at auction. We are trying to prepare to receive new arrivals from the auction. Our trip is in planning. Details to come soon.

Once again I am amazed and grateful for the kindness and generosity of our local people, this weekend we met more wonderful volunteers.
We are pleased to have 2 new regular helpers, welcome Caitlin and Jolene. They will join Vicki, Stephanie, Aileen and Hannah for assistance with feeds and regular maintenance at the rescue.

A special thank you to David for your hours of help right through til dark! installation of our 24' panels and removal of the old iron ones was hard, very heavy work, impossible without help. We are grateful for not only your man power, but your efforts in planning upcoming building projects. Our hay storage barn is on the drawing board.

Much has been done and our "to do" list is getting shorter!!

This month we have our 2 run in barns up and ready to shield our horses from the winter rains. The division of these into stalls will be our next task.
Our paddocks were relocated and enlarged. We hope to have individual shelters for these as well.
Our arena area and round pens are up, clean and we are preparing the ground for sand.
Our small turnouts are being enlarged, posts reinforced and field fencing to be replaced.
We have out special extra large stall/paddock under construction in preparation for any horse in need of stall rest or for a mare to foal.
Blanket bars were installed in the red barn.
Auto waters purchased and ready to be installed.
The location for the new barn has been marked and the ground is being cleared. We expect to receive it in the next 2 weeks.

Our handsome newcomer that came with the name of Patrick has picked up the additional title of James,so is now known as James Patrick. We are calling him JP for short.

JP came with front lameness, having his misfitted shoes pulled has already helped, though he is still very sore. He will be re-shod following x-rays to determine the cause of his lameness.
He is a high energy horse but seems very sensitive on the line. Our riding evaluation will be held until he is sound, but he comes with a history of dressage training and jumping.
His recommendations and restrictions will be determined following his upcoming assessments.

The work at Lone Oak continues, we are happy to say we have new homes for Sugar and Dixie, we know Patty and Gary will provide a wonderful home. We have 2 new friends at Lone Oak.

Rio is a Sr pony who came to us this past week. He is in need of dental and farrier care. He has obvious pain when walking and is a little underweight, that should be corrected with dental and a diet designed for a Sr horse. Our vet and farrier assessment are screening for any medical conditions, such as diabetes and cushings, meanwhile he has a thick bed of shavings and medication for pain. Rio will have a permanent home at Lone Oak Rescue. We are looking for 4 regular sponsors for $25/month for our little Rio.

Rio shows the evidence of chronic laminitis, we will do our best to get his feet back under him and keep him stable and comfortable.
Our other boy is Patrick. He is approx 15 y/o he is a quarter/Tb cross. He stands at about 16 HH. He needs new shoes and evaluation by our vet. Currently showing slight lameness at the trot only. He is a pretty boy, insecure by himself, but settles immediately with a pasture mate.
He will be available post evaluation.

This month has been so busy, and the computer has been plagued with many sick days. It has been too long since an update, so here we are.

We are happy to say several of our horses have new homes!!

Bree, Shelby, Emma, Sugar, and Quinn are settled into their new homes. JD was here and gone so fast he never made our available list. Sugar and Dixie's adoption is pending while their new owners complete their pasture and shelters. Their are potential adopters coming to meet Mia, Macy, Kay and Cass. We hope to have new homes for them in the next few weeks.

We are still working on our site in preparation for the cold wet months ahead of us and much progress is being made. As soon as the new barn 8 stall barn is up we will open the doors for more horses in need. We are hoping to have funds and assistance for an additional 6. Please help us with our fund raising efforts. Join us on our trail ride, or simply make a donation of any amount. All proceeds at this time go to the hay fund and our planned trip to the auction.
Please help us prepare for these upcoming expenses so we can help more.

Many thanks to the numerous volunteers who have become regulars here at Lone Oak Rescue.

Our list of chores and projects remains full and we always need more hands. Our construction projects need to be completed. Below are our top priorities.
Construct hay storage.
Place roof on open barn.
Construct additional shelters.
Someone with a small tractor/bucket to help level small areas .
Replace current runs with electric.
Install auto water buckets in barn.

We have a small group of volunteers who have been working grooming feeding and exercising the horses. Thank you all for being so great. Please contact us if you would like to be a part of that group, horse/riding experience is required for this group.

We are looking for dedicated persons to join our efforts. Please contact us if you are interested in the following positions. The majority of these hours are off site but we encourage on site participation as well.

- photo album management.
- volunteer coordinator
- fundraising coordinator
- website assistant

Thank you to all of you who have joined our efforts, we have several horses pending adoption which means we can help others. If you need assistance placing a horse please contact us, we have people looking for horses but do not have the suitable match for them.

Currently we have a need for a calm well trained horse for a family for arena and basic riding only, no competition or heavy riding. As well we have an individual looking for a gelding, trained and capable for packing/trails.

We are having a tack sale next week Sunday the 15th please join us we are still looking for donations, receipts for all items donated.

Watch for more fundraising events in the works, and please contact us with your fundraising suggestions. Together we can help more horses find the homes they deserve.

Saturday was great, many thanks for the volunteers who joined us. There were chores done and projects completed and horses groomed and exercised. pictures as soon as I figure out why there not loading!!! you guys all looked so good!!

Quinn leaves us

Today I took Quinn to his new home. As we started down the driveway Duke ran following us, he and Quinn calling back and forth. I stopped and told Duke he had to say goodbye because Quinn was leaving. I was stopped for 4 or 5 minutes as they put nose to nose several times and then I started to drive away slowly. Duke stood and watched for a few moments and then ran back to the barns where he stood and watched us leave. What they communicated to each other I have no idea, but Quinn was quiet the rest of the ride and settled in to eating upon arrival. I want to think Duke said everything will be okay... kinda pulls at the heart strings

Saturday was productive and a great time. A special thank you to John for the doors to our tack room, as well as the many hands helping with daily maintenance. There was new introductions to horses and for some it brought back that urge to ride, and so we did. Duke, Bree, Dixie, were wonderful to there riders and Kalib and Jake did great on there lessons. This week one of my favorite horses came home. Kalib is a wonderful little guy, has not finished his training, will do so with us. He is a high energy arabian who requires time and dedication. He is available with training stipulations.

Today there was much running around, myself with errands that never end and with the horses, well running just for the fun of it!. Quinn must have woke the playful side of Cass as together they ran bucked and reared playing tag back and forth. Cass of course leaving little Quinn behind when he decided to stretch those long TB legs.... what a delight to see him stretch out running ,nothing keeping up but the wind.
He set off the herd and away they ran up and down the hills. Mia and Macy in the middle of the herd that was running full tilt.
It is amazing that little Macy only 8 weeks old keeps up with Mom, but there she was right by her side. Its days like this that make me want to sit on the hill and do nothing but watch them just being horses.

Finally a minute to sit and update. Mia had an episode of colic and all hands were on deck to pull her through, she is doing well. Macy is growing like crazy, sassy and loving to run in the pasture. Mya is accepting a saddle well and expect to be on her soon. More ground work and an evening ride with Stephanie finished my day.

This week is the start of a change of schedule for myself and as a result for the rescue as well. We will be able to have additional volunteer days that will consist of 2-4 hour periods in the mornings. These will be times committed to both horse care and ranch work. We welcome regular volunteers to arrange times to work with us and encourage you to become a barn mom or dad to a particular horse. Also coming are days dedicated to our young horse enthusiasts. Watch for announced days and times.

A special thank you and much appreciation for Stephanie who has helped out til dark this weekend. She is a long time horse gal,great around the horses and game for our many projects. We need more like you!!!
Cassanova is back at the ranch with sore knees, unable to perform as his adopting owner needed. so once stable he again will be available for a light riding home. In the meantime he is in love with Stephanie, following her around like a puppy....

Today was a small showing for our volunteer day, but what a bunch they were!! I huge thank you for all that we accomplished!!
We have our stalls in our 4 stall barn all prepped for mats.... there was a wonderful job of cleaning for our little ones Macy and Tina, and framing was completed and walls up on our new tack room. Lots of wind didn't stop us.... even though it tried pretty hard.

Today was a full day. We were assisted with a vet day by Kathryn, she transported 2 of our horses and one placed to a central barn where we shared a vet call.

There was exams and dental work (Sugar)

A big thank you to Dr Kessinger who let us tag onto his vet call. All went well and everyone behaved very well. A little sleepy from medications they got to enjoy the afternoon sun. Our day was almost done.... all but the drive home.

Macy has decided that momma Mia's food looks yummy, but Mia does not want to share with pushy babies (might have something to do with energetic little spells of kicking and bucking where she kicked mom).... so now there are 2 bowls of grain.
Macy is a very friendly personable little one, we love on her daily and now she is learning to lead.

It was recently said I am "mom" to all of them, and how hard it will be to let her go. Every one of the horses has their own personality and I get to know them well. We are a small rescue and we want to make sure that we take that time to get to know the horses to ensure the horse have a home that is going to be well suited to them. That is our goal, but in the mean time each one is treated like they are our own personal horses, and given that individual attention. The trust and relationship that is formed is my reward....

The trio .... Bree Shelby and Emma

Tonight I decided the weather was perfect for an evening ride. Bree and I rode as the sun set, riding along just the two of us... or so we thought. Curious bunch they are, the herd had to run over and see where we were going. Duke, Maggie, Zaida, Kay, Dixie, Keeva, Mya, Shelby and Emma followed us a half mile or so down the road, then stopped and waited for us to return. Upon our return trip they ran to greet us and we were escorted all the way back to the corrals, Emma and Shelby flanking us so close I could have changed mounts on either side. And here I though I was going on a solo ride.....
